step by step music composition
How can I start my career as a commercial composer?

I have a decent microphone, and I can mix pretty good sounding demos. I record music with guitars, ukulele, melodica, trombone, and percussion. I’m only 19, but my music is pretty decent so far. I want to crack into the scene of commercial composition. What kind of steps do you recommend taking to get my material out there? Should I try selling demos to a company? If you have a good demo, will a company commission you to record it in a studio? Also, what kind of college degree would work best for me? and does anyone know how hard is it to make it in that bussiness? Can you make a living with ease?

Competition is tough, and there are many people who are highly qualified – highly. They have at minimum a degree in composition from a top music college or conservatory, and many have Masters degrees. They also have contacts, and many years of experience. Listing the *stuff* you own is useless – you wish to compose, not do audio engineering or recording. So – can you get into a good music college composition program? Do you have digitally-prepared scores to submit to the audition committee? Are your academic grades excellent, and can you pass a very difficult audition on your major instrument? This assumes MANY years of rigorous study with a top teacher – one that is degreed in their major instrument, not the stoner at the local music store. You music appears to have a strange instrumentation – can you compose for ALL instruments, and have you studied instrumentation and orchestration, besides composition. Do you know how to score for film or TV? I ask all this because your COMPETITION has done all of the above and more – and most of them are out of work in this field.

Nobody is accepting demos from people. They would be flooded. People who have a need for a composer, or a commission to offer, approach people who already HAVE a track record of successful public performances of their compositions, in respected venues – this doe NOT include any *popular* music places, clubs, etc. – more likely, they have completed a Film Composition major or Music Composition major at a respected conservatory. Do some research – read the admission requirements at any and all c fine music colleges that you can think of, or find. This will give you a realistic picture of what you need to do.
